Schedule: Full-time

Joining Intuitive Surgical means joining a team dedicated to using technology to benefit patients by improving surgical efficacy and decreasing surgical invasiveness, with patient safety as our highest priority.

Primary Function of Position:

Intuitive Surgical designs and manufactures highly-complex robotic systems for use in minimally-invasive surgical applications. These master-slave tele-robotic systems consist of several multi-degree-of-freedom robotic manipulators that are used to measure motion inputs from the surgeon and to maneuver surgical instruments. This responsibility crosses into electrical, mechanical, software, controls, and safety engineering where all the subsystems are integrated together. The engineer in this position will play a key role on the Manufacturing Software Engineering team to enable manufacturing team to build and test new generation of surgical robots. This engineer will develop the manufacturing test and diagnostic software that assures the performance and safety of robot subsystems. The position will require close collaboration with product development teams, systems analysts, electrical test fixture engineers, manufacturing engineers, and quality engineers to build a coherent test strategy and develop software.

Roles and Responsibilities:

• Maintain, improve and correct manufacturing software algorithms on robotic platforms for minimally-invasive surgery, as part of a cross-functional development team
• Facilitating hardware and software integration, bring-up, and characterization of systems that include electrical, mechanical, software, controls, user interaction, and safety subsystems
• Design, document, and qualify software for use in manufacturing new robot subsystems
• Follow good software development practices to design, document, and qualify software for use in manufacturing
• Work independently to overcome roadblocks with minimum guidance
• Take ownership of manufacturing software and work with cross-functional teams to drive projects to completion

Mandatory Skill / Job Requirements:

• BS (MS or PhD preferred) degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics or similar field relating to robotics and electro-mechanical systems
• 5+ years of experience in applications development, embedded systems, manufacturing engineering / test engineering / diagnostics software
• Strong programming skill and experience in Python, Matlab and C/C++,
• Excellent ability to communicate complex concepts to engineers in different functional areas
• Demonstrated outstanding verbal and written communication skills with the ability to clearly present to larger groups
• Ability to learn rapidly, driving to creative-yet practical-solutions from rough requirements
• The ability to excel within a high-energy, small, focused team environment, maintain a strong sense of shared responsibility and shared reward, and to make work fun and interesting
• Strong problem solving skills, real excitement to learn and get to bottom of tough technical problems
• Experience in medical device manufacturing or regulated engineering environment
• Experience developing robotic or electro-mechanical systems, including control systems
• Experience working in a lean manufacturing environment
