The idea of surgical robotics was little more than a curiosity until 1999, the year Intuitive Surgical introduced the da Vinci® Surgical System. Today, Intuitive Surgical is the global leader in the rapidly emerging field of robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgery. Intuitive Surgical is also the leader in capturing surgical operative data, from over 3,600 surgical robotic systems used by over 33,000 surgeons globally.
We are looking for a talented individual to join our growing Data Science team focused on solving our most complex and pressing business problems. This role has the opportunity to work creatively with a team of mixed disciplines, including other data scientists. The primary function of this position is to help the company measure, control, and optimize its global commercial processes through data wrangling, curation, analysis and statistical modeling. To tackle this challenge, we have at our disposal to mine: a highly customized version of Salesforce.com, da Vinci® Surgical System operational data (representing over five million procedures), and an increasing number of other data sets. The successful candidate must have a strong curiosity for how our customers approach, value, adopt, and learn cutting-edge technology. She/he must have a proven track-record of insight generation from data, extreme curiosity of the unexplored or unexplained, great attention to detail, no fear of incomplete or messy data, and, most importantly, a passion to improve patient outcomes.
Roles and Responsibilities:
The Data Scientist participates in problem formulation and application of analysis and statistical/modeling techniques to solve business problems and optimize Intuitive Surgical sales effectiveness, among other problems which may be assigned in the future. Primary interface is the Sales Enablement team.
The Sales Enablement Team is chartered with identifying optimal sales methodology and creating evidence, insights, and tools to reinforce this methodology. The team gives vital guidance to commercial leadership that informs data-driven organizational change. The team also isolates and reinforces the behaviors of the best sales people and managers to insure guidance and enablement are based on demonstrated best practice - Data Science is integral to its success.
Specific roles and responsibilities comprise:
• Integrate and become a vital working member of the Sales Enablement team in helping set priorities and strategies, and measurable objectives and performance.• Deeply understand the customer journey for our varied customers. Understand the sale of $2M surgical systems, and of the consumables that work with them; understand the partnership between Intuitive Surgical and a surgeon as she/he decides to adopt the technology; understand the surgeon training process and the technology adoption and mastery processes. Become immersed in all related data, and understand the strengths and limitations of these data.• Deeply understand the clinical and capital selling process, and the factors that contribute to successful sales.• Build data foundations to measure process effectiveness and sales execution.• Develop testable hypotheses, and statistically driven insights therefrom, that give sales leadership potent insights from which they may direct and motivate the sales team.• Link sales data with daVinci® Surgical System data, to provide insights linking sales with adoption and continuing use.• Present and discuss findings to sales leadership and others in a collaborative, iterative and sometimes unscripted environment, as well in more formal settings.• Identify gaps in data capture, help identify how those data can be best captured, and work with IT organization to ensure applications are instrumented with proper tracking mechanisms to enable analytics.• Perform ad-hoc analytics requests, analyze test results, draws actionable insights and presents findings to management to determine and drive training strategy.• Create and automate on-going analytical reports to sustain program quality and improve efficiency (may work with IT organization for automation).• Apply advanced statistical and predictive modeling techniques to measure process effectiveness, including account targeting effectiveness, surgeon targeting effectiveness, and capital and clinical sales process effectiveness, and link process effectiveness to customer adoption of Intuitive Surgical’s technology and other key performance indicators.• Interpret and present, with team members, statistical model results that lead to business insights, and present findings to management.• Provide on-going tracking and monitoring of performance monitoring systems and operational statistical models.• Incorporate disparate data sources that are potentially incomplete and in need of data cleansing. In some cases provide prototype cleaning for future ownership by IT.• Collaborate with Sales, Sales Ops, Marketing, Finance and various other teams for cross domain analytics.
• Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, including strong presentation skills.• Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Operations Research, Data Science or related field.• Background in healthcare and familiarity with the business of surgery is desired, specifically background in the surgical equipment sales process (large capital and/or consumables).• 3+ years of experience in similar role.• An interest and capacity to quickly learn the business of medical robotics through immersion in clinical and technical training – an interest and desire to learn this space are a must.• Demonstrated track record of intellectual curiosity and initiative. Willingness and ability to provide guidance to business partners to “get to the testable hypothesis”. Demonstrated track record of “looking under rocks” and analyzing data in novel ways to get to hidden insights. A penchant to ask why over and over again. A sense of wonder combined with the chops to get to the answer.• A desire to work with and learn from smart, experienced business people to produce better insights. A personality that embraces teamwork across skill-sets and job titles.• Demonstrated ability to think analytically and use sound judgment; capable of building solutions and solving problems while displaying excellent critical thinking.• Strong knowledge of data science concepts (predictive modeling, regression analysis, control groups, etc.). Strong knowledge of statistical methods and applications. Ability to understand cohort analysis beyond “averages”.• Proficiency with programming and data mining/visualization tools such as R, Python, Tableau, SQL, SAP HANA SQL, SAS/JMP, or SPSS. Tableau experience is strongly desired. Accuracy and attention to detail are essential.• Experience with Salesforce.com is strongly desired.• Experience working with diverse large data sets and messy data, while making solutions repeatable and defensible.• Unflappable ability to extract and interpret data from various sources.• Strong organizational skills, ability to meet deadlines in a changing environment and perform multiple tasks effectively and concurrently. Self-management is important.• Ability to build and manage relationships with both internal and external teams.• Affinity for forging connections around the larger company to bring a more diverse set of possible approaches to a problem.• Strong sense of customer service for both internal and external customers.
