Primary Function of Position:

The User Researcher will be conducting user-centered design research efforts for Intuitive Surgical. The researcher will work with internal and external resources to conduct, analyze, and report user research findings with the goal to inform design decisions. The User Researcher works closely with the human factors engineers, interaction/visual/industrial designers, clinical engineers, and product marketing to inform and guide development of new da Vinci products, and ensure that those products are easy to use and safe. This role will report to our Manager of User Research, and is part of our Human Factors and User Research team.

Roles and Responsibilities:

• Perform all aspects of research studies including study design, instrument development, data collection (both desktop and in the field) and management, quantitative and qualitative data analysis, reporting and dissemination, and communication with partners
• Create actionable insights for improving products and services based on results of internally and externally-driven research
• Present results of user research throughout the organization.
• Serve as a member of a team that acts as a 'repository' of research-based usability knowledge.
• Support the implementation of new technologies and systems to support user research
• Reinforce a human centered design approach across the organization.
 
Qualifications

Skill/Job Requirements: 

• BS in Human Factors Engineering, Product Design, HCI/Cognitive Science, Social Sciences, Communications, Anthropology, Design, Psychology, or related field. MS preferred.
• 3+ years of relevant User Research experience.
• Experience in medical device or healthcare delivery sciences, or similar regulated industry, a plus
• Ability to conduct user research studies in diverse populations demonstrated by a portfolio of designing and executing research studies (ideally in Health Care).
• Ability to conduct traditional and rapid cycle evaluation of products (e.g. prototype testing, usability and user experience testing, and feasibility testing) within and beyond the lab (experimentally evaluating services, products, or tools in the field),
• Ability to analyze and synthesize large quantities of qualitative and quantitative data using QDA software and statistical software (e.g. NVivo, atlas.ti, SAS, Stata, R)
• Superior ability to write accurate, clear, and concise protocols and reports in a timely manner
• Excellent verbal communication and presentation skills
• Ability to interface with customers and consultants in a highly professional manner
• Ability to work with and across various groups and levels of management within the organization, including other engineering groups, marketing, clinical engineering, and design. Excellent collaboration skills.
• Self-motivated
• Ability to travel internationally, as well as domestically (up to 40%)
