Primary Function of Position:

As a key member of Intuitive Surgical’s Global Public Affairs (GPA) team, you will evolve and direct the company’s thought-leadership strategy, messaging and materials through its Conferences and Speakers’ Bureau platform globally. You are an experienced practitioner of message discipline and know how to imbue a program and colleagues with this critical skill. Primary focal areas include: US and country-specific program development, including conference intake and assessment process, messaging, materials and presentation strategy and development, selection and training of Intuitive spokespeople and proactive conference identification, pitching and relationship building. Providing strategic counsel to internal audiences and directing the development of strategic messaging and talking points to advance the company’s thought-leadership positions will be key. You will oversee and be deeply involved in day-to-day conference operations globally, including working with multiple internal clients in the US and globally, to help meet corporate and country-specific thought-leadership goals. Besides Intuitive presenters, you may also work with external stakeholder/presenters, including policymakers, patient advocacy groups, media and KOL’s.

Roles and Responsibilities:

The preferred location for this position is Sunnyvale, however other locations may be considered. Specific responsibilities include:

Conference Platform & Speakers’ Bureau:

• Evolve the existing corporate thought-leadership platform globally including opportunities and speakers.
• Together with GPA colleagues (media relations & government and public affairs), Executive team and General Managers, develop and execute in-country thought leadership strategies in the US and direct markets globally, including: UK & Ireland, France, Germany, Nordics, Japan, Korea, China and others.
• Engage in conference assessment and mapping to build and enhance the strategic framework.
• Develop thought leadership platform and corporate positioning to advance the company’s pioneering role in, and current position as a global leader of, robotic-assisted surgery. Tailor appropriately to meet country and culturally specific needs.
• Distill messaging, develop corporate narrative into a compelling, concise talk track and create message discipline through this thought-leadership platform.
• Drive strong visual storytelling to complement the written word.
• Provide strategic counsel to key internal clients around conference selection criteria, speaker placement, presentation development and ongoing training to enhance execution.
• Develop executive speaker personal brands.
• Identify and train additional corporate colleagues to become presenters.
• Build Speakers’ Bureau capacity and ensure messaging, material and presentation consistency as the company expands.
• Attend key conferences in support of corporate presenters, as needed.
• Potentially advise other external speakers/stakeholders, as needed.
Presentation and Writing
• Superior speaking and presenting skills and experience.
• Excellent writing and story-telling skills.
• Experience training others to draft compelling and dynamic content into presentations and to present effectively.
Market Knowledge
• Strong expertise and background in Conference planning and Speakers’ Bureau development and enhancement.
• Strong expertise/experience in the healthcare sector/healthcare policy.

Skill/Job Requirements:

Competency Requirements: (Competency is based on: education, training, skills and experience.) In order to adequately perform the responsibilities of this position the individual must:

• Have 12+ years’ experience in corporate Executive Communications, political campaigns, journalism or speechwriting.
• Strong preference for having previously served as an executive or campaign speechwriter or presentation/debate coach and having managed a corporate Conference/Speaking function.
• Strong preference for healthcare experience, specifically medical device or pharma, or in another regulated industry for more than 5 years.
• Superior management skills, especially the ability to monitor and manage multiple conferences for multiple speakers in different countries.
• Strong track-record of operating within a highly matrixed organization where many internal clients are field based and in different states and/or countries.
• Ability to effectively analyze, write and deliver information, and explain, advocate and negotiate positions and issues to a broad spectrum of individuals required.
• Ability to tailor materials to effectively communicate with multiple internal and external audiences, including colleagues in different departments and countries, different high-value external stakeholders and audiences.
• Ability to work independently and juggle multiple projects and deadlines and in multiple time zones
• Responsive and focused on executing in a fast-paced environment
• Solid judgment.
• Have exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
• BA or BS degree required.
