Primary Function of Position:

The mission of Supplier Engineering is to ensure high quality and stable delivery of purchased production components from suppliers operating under robust quality systems to maximize Patient Value. Each supplier engineer is responsible for ensuring suppliers meet ISI requirements for product safety, quality, cost, delivery, and service. Drive suppliers to continuously improve business and manufacturing processes. Evaluate and select suppliers. Monitor supplier performance.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Supplier Quality and Performance Improvement

• Drive the Metals commodity supply base to continually improve their business and manufacturing process performance to meet Intuitive Surgical’s requirements for supplier excellence using a collection of best practices in project management, Six Sigma, Lean, SPC and negotiation
• Perform and maintain product/process risk analysis and ensure mitigations are implemented and effective
• Establish and sustain capable processes in machining and plastics.
• Maintain effective controls of quality and processes, including measurement systems
• Quickly address potential line down incidents
• Take ownership of dispositioning non-conforming material and address systemic or significant non-conformances with formal corrective actions
• Drive corrective actions by being proficient in the five whys, determining true root cause, implementing effective and lasting corrective and preventive actions
• Review, analyze and close customer complaints, manufacturing non-conformances, and first article inspections

Supplier Selection and Evaluation

• Select and evaluate suppliers that fit the Metals commodity supplier strategy and influence key stakeholders to utilize and maximize the use of the Preferred production supply base
• Support lead auditors in evaluating suppliers through planned audits on a routine basis to ensure they are operating under an effective Quality Management System and are conforming to applicable regulatory requirements
• Support Audit team in addressing findings and observations to develop suppliers in quality and business systems to meet requirements of ISI
• Promote new suppliers to production status and maintain the Approved Supplier List (ASL) for Metals commodity suppliers
• Identify opportunities and execute projects for cost reduction and quality improvement
o Collect and assess options then create tactics to implement supplier changes, manufacturing technology changes, or production optimization
o Own key deliverables and manage timelines in active projects

Process Development

• Select the right supplier for the part, considering long term fit and total cost of ownership
• Take a lead role in manufacturing process selection
• Complete Production Part Qualification Process deliverables: Supplier pFMEA, Special Process Validations, FAI, and Process Capability Analysis
• Support transfer of parts and suppliers from NPI to sustaining production
• Provide status of the readiness (quality, capacity, delivery) of the supply chain for major production process changes
• Drive changes to ISI requirements as necessary by initiating and managing changes to specifications and drawings through the ECO process
• Manage the planning and implementation of supplier change management projects using the Supplier Change Request process (SCR)
• Lead the team in overcoming difficult process issues encountered in the manufacture of components and assemblies
• Work cross-functionally to improve supplier engineering processes
• Educate internal customers and suppliers regarding supplier quality, process and operational capabilities, best value manufacturing methods and tooling for key supplier processes

Data Analysis / Performance Evaluation

• Organize and lead regular meetings with key suppliers and ISI stakeholders to assess supplier performance and improvement actions
• Manage supplier relationships to effectively partner ISI and the supplier
• Develop and use measurement techniques for supplier part quality, capability, cost, delivery, and capacity to judge when intervention is required
• Provide effective and timely supply base health information to management
• Prepare and deliver supplier communications as required by working with suppliers on scorecards, creation of Strategic Business Reviews, Supplier Summits, etc.
• Enable suppliers to monitor their quality performance through the Supplier Portal

Skill/Job Requirements:

In order to adequately perform the responsibilities of this position the individual must possess:

• BS degree in Engineering or equivalent
• 5-10 years related experience in Supplier Quality, Supplier Development, or related field
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Knowledge of Six Sigma and Lean Manufacturing techniques
• Dependable Project Management skills
• Outstanding analytical skills along with good judgment
• Demonstrable knowledge in evaluating and challenging supplier technical, quality, and business capabilities
• Experience with a wide range of manufacturing processes including understanding of key input variables for quality, cost and capacity (preferred specialization in metal fabrication)
• Proven ability to motivate suppliers and lead teams to solve difficult technical and process problems
• Knowledge of pFMEA, process validation, inspection and test techniques
• Excellent knowledge of 21 CFR part 820 and ISO 13485 (experience in auditing suppliers to these standards)
• Significant computer experience using Windows, Word, Excel, Access and ERP Information Systems, preferably SAP
• Ability to read and interpret detailed mechanical drawings and communicate technical information
• CAD experience with 3D modeling tools is a plus
• Experience in a medical device company is a plus
• Experience with low-volume high-mix production environments is a plus
• Ability to travel to suppliers on an as needed basis – domestic and international
