Primary Function of Position:

We are seeking a summer simulation content intern to assist the Training Technologies Team (Simulation). VR Simulation plays an important role in the improvement of robot-assisted surgeon proficiency. The VR Robotic Surgery Game Developer Intern position offers an opportunity for a candidate with exceptional software and virtual reality/video games engineering and programming skills to be part of the simulation content product development team. The candidate must have strong C# and Python programming skills to rapidly assist in the design and development of new surgical simulation content. A successful candidate will be equally comfortable using existing simulation software that interfaces with highly-complex robotic systems and instruments.

Roles and Responsibilities:

The candidate must have experience working in the graphics simulations, preferably using the Unity framework. The candidate must also have experience using C# and Python for several extensive projects. The candidate will collaborate with key software and research engineers to drive planned simulation modules to product. He or she must excel in a high-energy team environment, and be capable of owning and completing tasks with the time pressures typical of new products.

The candidate will also assist in various tasks related to simulation research, simulation validation studies and other interesting aspects of the surgical simulation field.

Specific responsibilities for the VR Robotic Surgery Game Developer include:

• Work under the guidance of our core simulation content engineers
• Quickly prototype simulation content from design specs
• Interact with and receive feedback from training and education team members
• Design and implement pilot studies of developed simulation modules
• Understand the da Vinci Robotics Platform streaming API’s and be able to consume streaming data inside our rendering engines.
• Develop software adhering to the ISI coding standards and good software development practices (unit testability, source code control, etc.)
• Execute systematic and aggressive evidence based troubleshooting techniques
Qualifications

Skills, Experience, Education, & Training:

• In process of Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Software, Electrical, or Computer Engineering
• Minimum 2 years experience in developing software and/or supporting software development teams, preferably in video game or VR simulation development
• Minimum 2 years experience programming in C# and Python
• Strong working knowledge in the open-source Unity programming framework
• Working knowledge in a 3D modeling software package such as: Blender.
• Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• An interest in the medical applications of robotics, with the ability to view surgical procedures and medical images.
• Ability to learn rapidly, driving to creative – yet practical – solutions from rough requirements.
• The ability to excel within a high-energy, small, focused team environment, maintain a strong sense of shared responsibility and shared reward, and to make work fun and interesting.
• Ability to carry objects up to 50 lbs.

• Help develop simulation content modules and move closer to product quality
• Become skilled in the entire simulation development process

Must be available to work full-time hours, M-F for 10-12 weeks beginning Summer of 2019
